Description
Cercospora leaf spot is a significant fungal disease caused by the pathogen Pseudocercospora cruenta. This disease primarily affects the foliage of legume crops, leading to significant defoliation and a reduction in the overall plant health and yield potential if left unmanaged.
Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is the primary host for this fungus. The disease thrives in regions where bean cultivation is intensive, particularly during periods of high humidity and moderate to warm temperatures, which are ideal for the rapid germination and colonization of the fungal spores.
Early symptoms include small, irregular spots on the leaves, which eventually develop a reddish-brown or dark brown color. Often, these lesions are surrounded by a distinct halo. In advanced stages, the centers of the spots may become necrotic. Under humid conditions, a fuzzy, gray-to-brown fungal growth may appear on the undersides of the leaves, indicating active sporulation.
