Cercospora leaf spot of clover is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Cercospora zebrina. It is a common and destructive condition that affects legumes, particularly clover, leading to reduced photosynthetic area and lower quality of forage crops grown for livestock feed.
This pathogen primarily targets various species of the genus Trifolium (clover). The infection typically occurs during warm and humid weather conditions, which are ideal for the development and dissemination of the fungal spores. It can significantly impact both newly established stands and mature fields of clover.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the appearance of small, irregular spots on the leaf surface. Initially, these spots may be pale or brownish, eventually darkening into a deep reddish-brown or purple color. As the spots expand, they may coalesce, leading to necrotic tissue and premature leaf drop across the entire plant stand.
