Description
Cercosporosis is a serious fungal disease caused by various species of the Cercospora genus. In agronomic practice, it is recognized as a major threat to global crop production. While the term may be confused with the protist group Cercozoa, in plant pathology, it refers strictly to the necrotic leaf spot diseases that impact plant physiology.
This pathogen affects a wide range of host plants, most notably sugar beets, soybeans, coffee, grapes, and various vegetable crops. The fungus colonizes the leaf tissue by entering through stomata, leading to chlorosis and eventually necrosis. It effectively disrupts the plant's metabolic processes and reduces overall health.
Symptoms typically present as small, circular or irregular spots on the foliage. These lesions often have a tan or grayish center surrounded by a dark brown or reddish-purple halo. As the disease progresses, these spots coalesce, causing leaves to wither prematurely. In humid conditions, a fuzzy, dark mass of conidia may appear on the lesions.
The development of cercosporosis is heavily favored by prolonged periods of warm, wet weather. Optimal infection occurs at temperatures between 20°C and 30°C and high relative humidity. The fungus overwinters in infested plant debris or soil, serving as the primary inoculum for the next growing season if field hygiene is neglected.
The economic impact of cercosporosis is significant, often resulting in severe yield losses and reduced quality of harvested produce. Control requires an integrated management strategy involving the use of certified disease-free seeds, resistant varieties, crop rotation, and timely applications of protectant or systemic fungicides to prevent the spread of the pathogen.
