Chaetomellales blight is a fungal infection caused by fungi within the order Chaetomellales. These organisms, often found as opportunistic pathogens or saprotrophs, target a wide variety of plant tissues. They are widely recognized in agricultural phytopathology for their ability to compromise plant health by invading both the leaf surface and the internal tissues of host plants.

The disease primarily acts as a necrotrophic pathogen, damaging plant tissues by secreting enzymes that lead to localized cell death. Once the fungus enters the plant through wounds or natural pores, the mycelium spreads rapidly, resulting in the formation of necrotic lesions that disrupt the plant's normal physiological processes and photosynthesis.

The host range is diverse, frequently affecting berry crops, ornamentals, and various vegetables. It is particularly prevalent in environments with high humidity, such as greenhouses or during prolonged wet seasons. The fungi effectively colonize susceptible host tissue, eventually producing fruiting bodies that release spores to spread the infection to neighboring plants.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, circular, or irregular brown to black spots on leaves, stems, and sometimes fruits. As the disease progresses, these lesions expand, often showing a concentric pattern. A hallmark sign of the infection is the development of tiny, dark-colored pycnidia, which become visible to the naked eye within the necrotic patches under high humidity.

In ornamental horticulture, the resulting spotting and defoliation significantly diminish the market value of the plants.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to plant health. This includes stringent sanitation practices such as the removal and destruction of infected leaves and debris. Chemical control using preventive and curative fungicides, particularly those targeting coelomycetes, is highly effective when applied at the first signs of symptoms. Proper spacing and airflow management remain the best cultural practices for prevention.
