Chaetomium mold refers to a group of fungal diseases caused by species of the Chaetomium genus. These fungi act as saprotrophs or weak parasites, commonly leading to seed decay, root rot, and the damping-off of seedlings in various agricultural crops.
The pathogen significantly affects numerous crops, with legumes such as soybeans being highly susceptible. It primarily colonizes seeds and plant debris, utilizing them as a nutrient source while simultaneously suppressing the physiological development of the germinating plant.
Key symptoms include the formation of dark, olive-green to black fungal mats on the seed surface. During the diagnostic process, specific flask-shaped fruiting bodies known as perithecia can be observed under magnification, often featuring distinct hair-like structures. Infected seeds often fail to germinate or rot shortly after emergence.
The development and spread of Chaetomium are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high humidity and soil temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C. Cold, waterlogged soil conditions are particularly favorable for infection, as they delay seedling emergence and expose vulnerable tissues to fungal colonization for extended periods.
