Cilioplea is a genus of ascomycetous fungi recognized as a plant pathogen that impacts various agricultural crops. These fungi are typically associated with necrotic tissues and can act as secondary invaders, colonizing plants that are already stressed by environmental factors, nutrient deficiencies, or other primary diseases.
Cereals, including wheat and barley, are the primary hosts for Cilioplea species. The fungus is often found on the stems and leaves, where it utilizes plant debris or aging tissues to complete its life cycle. It is particularly prevalent in fields where crop residue management is insufficient, providing a substrate for the fungus to persist.
The primary symptoms of infection involve the appearance of numerous small, dark structures known as perithecia on the surface of the affected plant organs.
