Citrus tatter leaf is a viral disease caused by the Citrus tatter leaf virus (CTLV), which is closely related to the Apple stem grooving virus. This pathogen causes systemic infection in citrus trees, leading to significant physiological stress and a distinct pattern of damage known as 'tatter leaf' due to the necrotic and malformed appearance of the foliage.

The virus primarily affects commercial citrus varieties, such as lemons, sweet oranges, and grapefruits, especially when these are grafted onto sensitive rootstocks like Poncirus trifoliata. In compatible rootstock-scion combinations, the virus may remain latent; however, in incompatible combinations, it causes severe decline and growth stunting.

Symptoms typically include irregular, tattered leaves with necrotic spots and vein chlorosis. Affected trees often exhibit poor vigor, reduced leaf size, and significant canopy thinning. Because the virus disrupts the vascular system, the overall tree health deteriorates, leading to reduced fruit production and economic losses in commercial citrus orchards.

Transmission occurs primarily through the use of infected budwood during the grafting process. Furthermore, the virus can be spread mechanically through contaminated pruning tools or during agricultural maintenance tasks. Unlike many other plant viruses, the spread of CTLV is heavily linked to human intervention in the propagation and care of the trees.

Management of the disease relies entirely on preventative strategies. It is essential to source virus-free, certified nursery stock and implement rigorous sanitation protocols. Sterilizing grafting knives and pruning equipment between trees is crucial to preventing the mechanical spread of the virus. Once a tree is infected, there is no curative treatment, making removal and destruction of symptomatic plants the standard practice to protect the surrounding orchard.
