Description

The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Cladobotryum amazonense, a significant threat to commercial mushroom production. It is classified as a necrotrophic pathogen that rapidly colonizes the casing layer and the developing fruit bodies of cultivated fungi.

The primary host for this pathogen is the white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus). When introduced into the production environment, the fungus can proliferate rapidly, leading to substantial economic losses by making the entire harvest unmarketable.

The characteristic symptoms of the disease involve the appearance of a fast-spreading, thin, white or greyish-white mycelial mat, often referred to as cobweb mold. This mold covers the surface of the mushrooms, eventually causing soft rot, browning of the tissue, and complete degradation of the sporocarp structure.

Disease progression is highly dependent on environmental parameters, specifically favoring high humidity and stagnant air conditions. The spores are easily dispersed throughout the growing room via airflow, water splashes, mites, or by human contact, making containment a top priority for farm management.

Effective management and prevention strategies include the following practices:

  • Maintaining rigorous sanitation protocols within the growing facilities.
  • Optimizing ventilation systems to reduce surface moisture on mushrooms.
  • Ensuring the casing soil is pasteurized correctly before use.
