Cladonia rangiformis is a species of fruticose lichen, not a botanical disease of crops. In agricultural practice, it is often misinterpreted as a parasitic infection because it occupies areas where soil health is compromised. Unlike true pathogens, it does not attack plants; instead, it colonizes barren or degraded soil surfaces where competition from higher plants is minimal.
The biology of this lichen centers on its ability to thrive in oligotrophic environments—soils low in nutrients. It utilizes atmospheric moisture and nutrients, making it highly independent of soil fertility. However, its presence acts as a bio-indicator, signaling to agronomists that the soil surface has likely been eroded or overgrazed, leading to a decline in crop or forage productivity.
Development and spread of Cladonia rangiformis occur primarily through vegetative propagation via thallus fragments. It prefers well-drained, lime-rich, or sandy soils. Once established, it forms a crust-like structure that effectively prevents the germination of seeds from desirable forage grasses, thereby stalling natural succession and land recovery.
Its negative impact on agriculture is indirect but significant. By covering the ground, the lichen limits the available space for productive vegetation, hinders water infiltration into the soil, and reduces the overall grazing capacity of the land. In heavily infested areas, the forage yield is significantly diminished, forcing farmers to invest in soil restoration.
