Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Colletotrichum americae-borealis, a significant pathogen affecting soybean production globally. This fungus is a specialized parasite that can survive in crop debris and infect new plant tissues under suitable climatic conditions. It is classified as an ascomycete and is responsible for significant yield losses in susceptible soybean cultivars.
Soybeans (Glycine max) are the primary host for this pathogen. The fungus exhibits a wide range of tissue preference, affecting seedlings, stems, leaves, petioles, and pods. Because the pathogen can be seed-borne, infected grain represents a major risk factor for introducing the disease into new or previously clean agricultural fields.
Diagnostic signs typically appear as dark, water-soaked, or necrotic lesions on infected plant parts. As the infection progresses, these spots often develop tiny, black acervuli, which are the fungal fruiting bodies. Under conditions of high humidity, these structures produce masses of spores, giving the lesions a pinkish or greyish appearance, leading to tissue blight and potential stem girdling.
Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the spread of Colletotrichum americae-borealis. The pathogen thrives in warm temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C and high moisture environments. Rain-splash and wind-blown spores are the primary mechanisms for local dissemination, making wet seasons particularly dangerous for the health of soybean stands.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to disease control. Key strategies include the use of high-quality fungicide-treated seeds, implementing a strict crop rotation system to break the disease cycle, and managing soil fertility to optimize plant vigor. Deep tillage to bury infected stubble and the use of resistant soybean germplasm are also essential pillars of a successful disease prevention program.
