Description

The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus Colletotrichum chrysophilum, a member of the diverse genus known for inducing anthracnose in a vast array of plant species. This pathogen is highly specialized in infecting plant tissues by breaking down cell walls and secreting toxins. It persists in the environment through dormant spores and mycelium within infected plant debris or soil.

This fungus is a significant threat to a wide range of agricultural crops, including various fruits like avocados and citrus, as well as berries and ornamental plants. It attacks nearly all parts of the host plant, but the most severe damage typically occurs on fruits and leaves, leading to aesthetic degradation and significant yield losses during the harvest period.

The primary symptoms appear as sunken, dark-colored lesions on the foliage, stems, and ripening fruits. As the disease advances, small black acervuli, which are the fruiting bodies of the fungus, emerge within the infected area. Under high humidity conditions, these spots often produce a slimy, pink or orange-colored spore mass, which serves as the primary source of secondary infection.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Colletotrichum chrysophilum. The pathogen thrives in warm temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius and requires high relative humidity to successfully germinate and colonize host tissues. Splashing rain, irrigation, and wind are the primary mechanisms for the dispersal of spores throughout the field or orchard.

Economic damage is substantial, as infected crops often succumb to rot during storage and transit. A proactive management strategy is required to minimize losses and stop the spread. Key recommendations for control include:

  • Regular pruning of infected branches to improve air circulation and reduce inoculum.
  • Application of preventative fungicides when environmental conditions are conducive to disease.
  • Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of fallen leaves and rotten fruits.
