Description
Coffee anthracnose, associated with the fungal pathogen Colletotrichum cigarro, is a devastating disease affecting coffee production globally. This fungus belongs to a group of pathogens that compromise the structural integrity of the plant, often leading to severe defoliation and the reduction of fruit yield in commercial plantations.
The pathogen targets various parts of the coffee plant, primarily leaves and berries. By colonizing these tissues, the fungus disrupts the plant's metabolic processes. The resulting tissue death, or necrosis, significantly limits the photosynthetic capacity of the tree, which can stunt its growth and make it more susceptible to other abiotic and biotic stressors.
Symptoms typically manifest as irregular dark brown or black lesions on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these lesions may expand and coalesce, often displaying a gray or sunken center where fungal spores are produced. Infected coffee cherries show visible browning and shriveling, commonly referred to as "black rot," which drastically impacts both the quantity and quality of the final product.
The development of Colletotrichum cigarro is highly dependent on environmental conditions. High humidity, heavy rainfall, and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C are optimal for spore germination and colonization. Water splash serves as the primary mechanism for the dispersal of spores throughout the canopy, especially in dense plantations with poor airflow.
To mitigate the impact of this disease, integrated pest management practices are essential. The following strategies are recommended:
- Pruning and removing infected branches to reduce the inoculum level in the field.
- Implementing proper spacing to ensure adequate air circulation and reduce humidity within the canopy.
- Using appropriate fungicide treatments when disease incidence thresholds are reached.
- Prioritizing the cultivation of disease-resistant varieties and maintaining optimal soil fertility to enhance natural plant defense mechanisms.
