Description
Coffee berry disease (CBD) is a devastating fungal infection caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum kahawae. This fungus is specifically known for its ability to target coffee fruits, leading to severe economic losses in the coffee industry. It is considered one of the most significant constraints to Coffea arabica production in several African countries, where the environment is highly conducive to the pathogen's life cycle.
The primary hosts of this disease are trees of the genus Coffea. While different species show varying degrees of susceptibility, the impact on Coffea arabica is particularly severe. The pathogen affects berries at all stages of development, from the initial fruit set through to maturity. Without proper intervention, entire harvest yields can be decimated, threatening the livelihoods of coffee farmers.
Symptoms of CBD begin as small, dark, water-soaked lesions on green berries. These lesions rapidly expand, become sunken, and eventually turn black as the fruit tissues die. Under humid conditions, the pathogen produces a mass of conidia, often visible as a pinkish-gray coating on the surface of the berry. Eventually, the berries shrivel, harden, and either fall off or remain attached to the branch as mummified remains.
The spread of Colletotrichum kahawae is heavily dependent on favorable climatic conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures. Rain-splash is the primary mechanism for spore dispersal within the canopy of the coffee tree. Dense planting, poor ventilation, and frequent rainfall create the optimal environment for the pathogen to thrive and trigger an epidemic across the plantation.
