Description

The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Colletotrichum malvarum, a common pathogen responsible for anthracnose in various plants. It primarily affects the epidermal tissues of its host, utilizing specialized structures known as acervuli for asexual reproduction. The fungus survives unfavorable periods as mycelium or spores, primarily within infected plant debris or on dormant perennial plant tissues.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are plants within the Malvaceae family, most notably hollyhocks (Alcea rosea), mallows (Malva spp.), and marshmallow (Althaea officinalis). In agricultural and horticultural settings, the fungus can cause significant damage to both wild and cultivated species, rapidly spreading across beds if sanitation measures are neglected.

Symptoms initially appear as small, circular or irregular spots on leaves that soon expand into necrotic lesions with brown centers and darker margins. As the infection progresses, elongated, sunken lesions develop on stems and petioles. These can cause the collapse of stems, leading to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and, in severe cases, the complete death of the affected plant.

Disease development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and temperatures between 20°C and 25°C. Water splashes from rainfall or overhead irrigation are the primary vectors for conidia movement. Dense plant spacing creates a microclimate with reduced air circulation, which significantly accelerates the germination of spores and the spread of the fungus throughout the crop.

The economic and aesthetic impact of Colletotrichum malvarum is substantial. Infected plants lose their ornamental value rapidly, and for medicinal species, the harvest of leaves and roots is drastically reduced. Due to the rapid progression of the disease, early detection and integrated pest management are critical to preventing total loss of susceptible stands.
