Description

Alfalfa anthracnose is caused by the pathogenic fungus Colletotrichum trifolii. It is a severe disease affecting leguminous crops, particularly alfalfa (Medicago sativa). The fungus is a major constraint in high-moisture production areas, significantly impacting forage yield and stand longevity by compromising the structural integrity of the stems.

The host range is primarily limited to species within the Medicago genus. The pathogen invades the vascular system and cortical tissues of the stems, causing localized cell death. It persists in the soil and on infected crop residues, serving as a primary source of inoculum for subsequent growing seasons if proper field hygiene is not maintained.

Symptoms typically appear as diamond-shaped lesions on the lower stems, which later turn tan or dark brown with a distinct darker border. As the disease advances, small black acervuli (fruiting bodies) develop in the centers of these lesions. In severe cases, the crown of the plant may be colonized, leading to a condition known as "crown rot," which eventually kills the entire plant.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of Colletotrichum trifolii. The fungus thrives in warm, humid conditions with temperatures between 20°C and 28°C. Rain splashes and wind are the primary vectors for spore dissemination throughout the field. Dense canopy growth prevents adequate airflow, creating a microclimate that accelerates the spread of infection.

Integrated management is essential for successful control. Farmers should prioritize the use of resistant alfalfa varieties, which is the most effective defense strategy. Additionally, rotating crops to break the disease cycle, ensuring proper field drainage, and cleaning machinery between fields to prevent the transfer of contaminated debris are vital preventive measures. Early detection and timely harvesting can also mitigate significant losses.
