The genus Collybia refers to a group of fungi that typically act as saprotrophs but can behave as opportunistic pathogens under agricultural conditions. These fungi are basidiomycetes that thrive on decaying organic matter but can compromise the health of living plants if their root systems are stressed or exposed to overly wet conditions.

Collybia typically affects various crops, including vegetable plants and woody shrubs, particularly when soil management practices are inadequate. The primary impact is observed in the root zone and the root collar, where the fungus initiates a decomposition process that interferes with the plant’s ability to transport water and essential mineral nutrients.

Clinical signs of infection include wilting, stunting of overall plant growth, and yellowing of foliage starting from the lower levels. Upon inspection, the root collar area often shows signs of necrosis and may exhibit a visible fungal mycelium, which is the vegetative part of the pathogen infiltrating the host's tissues and degrading the cell walls.

High humidity and poor drainage create an environment conducive to spore germination and the rapid expansion of mycelium. When soil remains waterlogged, the resistance of the crop is significantly reduced, making it an easy target for the fungus.
