This fungus primarily affects substrates based on straw, sawdust, and sunflower hulls used for oyster or button mushroom production. In professional mushroom farms, the presence of this fungus is considered an indicator of technological failure within the production cycle.

The visual symptoms of an infestation include the sudden emergence of numerous small, delicate, grayish fruiting bodies on the surface of the substrate blocks. These fruiting bodies develop rapidly and undergo autolysis, releasing spores that contaminate the environment and facilitate further spread across the farm.

Environmental conditions that favor the development of Coprinopsis scobicola include excessive substrate moisture, high nitrogen content, and improper thermal processing.
