Coriolus zonatus, commonly referred to as the zoned bracket fungus, is a wood-decay fungus responsible for causing white rot. As a saprotrophic organism, it plays a vital role in decomposing organic wood matter, but it becomes a significant problem when it colonizes weakened or stressed live trees. This fungus belongs to the Polyporaceae family and is widespread in forest ecosystems and orchards.
The host range of this pathogen includes various hardwood species such as birch, beech, and different fruit-bearing trees. The fungus typically infects trees through compromised bark, pruning wounds, or environmental damage like frost cracks. Once established, the mycelium spreads throughout the sapwood and heartwood, utilizing enzymes to break down the complex wood structure, which ultimately compromises the tree's health.
Identifying Coriolus zonatus is relatively straightforward due to its distinctive fruiting bodies. These bracket-shaped caps are often clustered together and exhibit concentric zonation patterns, with colors ranging from pale gray to yellowish-brown. Infected wood tissues show clear signs of white rot, appearing bleached, soft, and brittle, often accompanied by the presence of a white fungal mat beneath the bark.
Environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and stable, warm temperatures, significantly influence the spread and growth of this fungus. It relies on wind-borne spores for dispersal, which settle on exposed wood surfaces. The accumulation of deadwood, old stumps, and neglected pruning debris creates a persistent reservoir of inoculum, facilitating continuous infection cycles within a specific area.
Preventive management is essential for long-term tree protection. Gardeners and foresters should focus on promoting tree vigor through adequate fertilization and irrigation to help trees defend against colonization.
