The rusty webcap (Latin: Cortinarius subferrugineus) is a species of fungus in the Cortinariaceae family. While typically recognized as a mycorrhizal fungus essential for forest health, in specific forestry and nursery settings, its presence is monitored due to its role in the soil ecosystem and potential interaction with the root systems of young forest plantations.
The fungus is primarily associated with coniferous species, particularly pine and spruce forests. In nursery environments, an overgrowth of Cortinarius mycelium can occur if the growing conditions are not strictly managed. This can lead to competition for nutrients with young seedlings, potentially affecting the vigor and development of the root network in highly sensitive saplings.
Symptoms of its presence include the emergence of distinct, rusty-brown fruiting bodies near the base of the trees.
