Birch cryptosporella (Cryptosporella betulae) is a fungal pathogen responsible for necrotic bark diseases and branch dieback in birch trees (Betula). As an ascomycete fungus, it typically acts as a wound parasite, exploiting existing injuries or stress factors to colonize the bark and cambium layers of the host plant.
The primary hosts are species within the Betula genus. The fungus affects birch trees in various environments, including forest plantations, nurseries, and urban landscapes. Trees that are already weakened by environmental stresses like drought, nutrient deficiencies, or insect infestations are significantly more susceptible to infection by this pathogen.
Symptoms include the development of necrotic lesions on twigs and stems. Affected bark becomes discolored, eventually turning brown or grey and sinking as the tissue beneath dies. The fungus produces small, dark, flask-shaped fruit bodies (ascomata) that erupt through the bark surface. As the infection progresses, it can girdle the branches, causing the tips to wither and turn brown.
The development and spread of Cryptosporella betulae are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly moisture. Spores are primarily dispersed by splashing rain, wind, and insect vectors.
