The pathogen responsible for this disease is the Hop stunt viroid (HSVd). Unlike viruses, this agent consists of a small, naked, circular RNA molecule without a protein capsid. Once inside the plant host, it replicates using the plant's own enzymatic machinery, leading to severe disruptions in hormonal signaling and cellular development.
This viroid affects a broad range of botanical species. Primary hosts include members of the Cucurbitaceae family, most notably cucumbers, melons, and watermelon. Beyond vegetable crops, the pathogen is known to impact fruit trees such as citrus, as well as woody plants like grapevines and hops, often acting as a hidden reservoir of infection in mixed cropping systems.
Symptoms of the infection typically include shortened internodes, which give the plant a stunted or dwarfed appearance. Foliage may become chlorotic, mottled, or reduced in size. The most diagnostic sign is the effect on the fruit: affected cucumbers exhibit a significant loss of green pigment, appearing pale or yellowish, and frequently displaying stunted growth or structural deformities.
Transmission occurs primarily through mechanical vectors. Standard horticultural practices, such as pruning, suckering, and harvesting, are the most frequent routes of spread. When contaminated tools cut through infected tissue and subsequently touch healthy plants, the viroid is introduced into the new host. Due to its high stability, the viroid can persist on surfaces for extended periods.
The impact of this disease on agricultural productivity is severe, leading to significant yield losses and rejection of produce due to poor quality. Since there are no systemic fungicides or antiviral agents capable of curing an infected plant, the economic focus remains on containment and strict exclusion. Early detection and rapid removal of infected plants are essential to prevent widespread outbreaks.
