Description

Hop stunt viroid (HSVd) is a pathogenic sub-viral agent belonging to the family Pospiviroidae, genus Hostuviroid. It consists of a single-stranded, circular RNA molecule without a protein coat. Despite its extreme simplicity, it is a highly efficient pathogen capable of causing systemic diseases in various high-value agricultural crops.

This viroid affects a broad range of hosts, most notably hops, but also grapevines, citrus, and stone fruits. Typical symptoms include severe dwarfing of the plant, shortening of internodes, leaf chlorosis, and significant reductions in yield and crop quality. In some hosts, it can cause bark cracking and other structural damages that weaken the plant's long-term viability.

The biology of HSVd is characterized by its reliance on the host's cellular machinery for replication. The viroid moves systemically through the phloem. It does not require a biological vector in the traditional sense, as it is primarily transmitted through mechanical means—such as contaminated tools during pruning, grafting, or propagation—and through infected planting material.

Environmental conditions, particularly warm temperatures, influence the rate of viroid replication and symptom expression. Since the pathogen often remains latent for long periods, infected plants can serve as asymptomatic reservoirs, facilitating silent spread within an orchard or hop yard. The systemic nature of the infection makes it impossible to cure an infected plant.

Management and control strategies are strictly preventive, focusing on exclusion and sanitation:

  • Using only certified, viroid-free plant material for establishing new plantings.
  • Strict sterilization of all pruning and propagation tools using disinfectants like sodium hypochlorite or ethanol.
  • Systematic roguing and destruction of infected plants identified via molecular diagnostic methods.
  • Implementing rigorous hygiene protocols for all field operations involving plant contact.
