Cucumber vein yellowing (CVYV) is a destructive viral disease that poses a significant threat to cucurbit production worldwide. The causal agent is a virus transmitted by the tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci), which facilitates the spread of the disease between plants within fields and greenhouses.
The virus primarily affects species within the Cucurbitaceae family. It is known to cause severe outbreaks in cucumbers and melons. Notably, it also affects watermelon, often leading to stunted development and economic losses due to reduced fruit quality and decreased total yield.
The primary symptoms manifest as a distinct yellowing of the leaf veins. As the disease advances, the yellowing spreads across the entire leaf, accompanied by interveinal chlorosis and leaf distortion. Infected plants exhibit shortened internodes, and the resulting fruits are typically deformed, small, and unmarketable.
The development of the disease is strictly dependent on the presence and population density of the vector, Bemisia tabaci. High temperatures and humidity levels typical of greenhouse environments provide optimal conditions for the whitefly to proliferate, which in turn drastically increases the incidence of CVYV infections.
