Cucumber mosaic
Cucumber mosaic
Description
Cucumber mosaic is a significant viral disease caused by the Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). Taxonomically, it belongs to the family Bromoviridae, genus Cucumovirus. It is recognized as one of the most destructive plant pathogens worldwide due to its extreme versatility, capable of infecting over 1,200 plant species, including vegetables, fruits, and ornamental plants.
The primary symptom of this infection is a characteristic mosaic pattern on the foliage, consisting of light and dark green mottling. Affected plants typically show stunted growth, leaf curling, and distortion. In cucumbers and other cucurbits, fruits often develop pale green or yellow spotting, become misshapen, and may exhibit a rough or warty texture, rendering them unfit for market.
The biology of the virus relies heavily on its vectors for survival and spread. CMV is primarily transmitted by aphids in a non-persistent, non-circulative manner. This means the virus adheres to the aphid's mouthparts after brief feeding on an infected plant and can be transmitted to a healthy host immediately. Mechanical transmission through pruning or harvesting equipment also plays a major role in greenhouse production environments.
The development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental factors that influence aphid populations. Warm, dry weather patterns promote rapid aphid migration and colonization of crops. The virus survives the winter in various perennial weed hosts, which serve as a critical reservoir for the virus, allowing it to re-emerge in early spring once vectors become active.
Management of Cucumber mosaic requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to be effective. Strategies include implementing strict sanitation practices, such as removing infected plants and eliminating weed hosts, using reflective mulches to deter aphids, and applying systemic or contact insecticides to control vector populations. Selecting resistant or tolerant crop varieties remains the most sustainable strategy for reducing potential economic losses.
