Description
Cucurbit yellow stunting disorder (CYSDV) is a significant viral disease affecting various crops, caused by a virus belonging to the Crinivirus genus. The virus is transmitted in a semi-persistent manner by the sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci. Once the insect feeds on an infected plant, it can transmit the virus to healthy plants for several days.
The disease targets a wide range of cucurbitaceous plants, including cucumbers, melons, watermelons, pumpkins, and squash. Because the virus can survive in various weed hosts and volunteer plants, managing the disease requires a deep understanding of local ecology and the ability to eliminate potential reservoirs of infection.
Symptoms typically begin with interveinal chlorosis on older leaves, which gradually spreads to younger foliage. As the disease advances, affected leaves may become brittle, yellow, and eventually show necrotic spots. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth, shortened internodes, and a reduced root system, leading to a significant decrease in vigor.
The development of the disease is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high temperatures and humidity levels that favor the rapid reproduction of the whitefly vector. Outbreaks are most severe in regions where host crops are grown continuously throughout the season, allowing the virus population to build up rapidly.
Controlling CYSDV is challenging because there is no direct cure for infected plants. Therefore, management must focus on prevention and vector control. Key strategies include:
- Rigorous control of whitefly populations using integrated pest management.
- Removal and destruction of infected host plants and weeds.
- Implementing break periods in planting to reduce virus pressure.
- Using reflective mulches to deter whiteflies from landing on young plants.
- Employing biological control agents or targeted chemical treatments against the vector.
