The disease is caused by the fungus Curvularia pallescens, a widespread pathogen known for causing leaf spot and blight in various plant species. As a pathogenic fungus, it colonizes the leaf tissue and interferes with the host plant's physiological processes. It is recognized as a significant fungal disease that can lead to reduced photosynthesis and overall yield loss in diverse agronomic crops.
The host range for this pathogen includes major cereal crops such as rice, corn, and wheat, as well as various types of turf and forage grasses. The fungus is capable of infecting plants at various developmental stages, often starting from the seedling stage. Given its ability to survive in soil and on crop debris, it poses a recurring threat to subsequent plantings in the same field.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, chlorotic spots that eventually expand into larger, brownish or dark-grey lesions. These spots often develop a yellow halo, reflecting the toxic effect of the fungal enzymes on the leaf tissue. Under conditions of high humidity, a characteristic greyish or velvety fungal growth can be observed on the surface of the lesions, representing the massive production of spores (conidia).
Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of disease progression. Curvularia pallescens thrives in environments characterized by high relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C. Rain splashes and wind serve as the primary mechanisms for spore dispersal, moving the inoculum from infected plant debris to healthy foliage. Frequent rainfall creates the necessary moisture film for the conidia to germinate and penetrate the host tissue.
The damage caused by this disease is significant, as it reduces the plant's leaf surface area and compromises its metabolic efficiency. To effectively manage and prevent the spread of the disease, integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are recommended. Key practices include:
- Application of systemic fungicides during the early stages of disease development.
- Improvement of field drainage to reduce excessive humidity.
- Rotation with non-host crops to break the fungal life cycle.
- Sanitation measures, including the destruction or deep burial of infected harvest residues.
