Description
Cylindrocladium root rot is a devastating fungal disease caused by the pathogen Cylindrocladium spathiphylli. It primarily affects the root system and vascular tissues of the host, leading to rapid wilting and collapse of the plant. This pathogen is highly persistent in soil and can easily devastate entire nursery stocks if not managed aggressively.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are plants belonging to the genus Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily). While it is highly host-specific, the prevalence of these plants in indoor horticulture and greenhouse environments makes this disease a significant economic concern for commercial growers and hobbyists alike, causing high mortality rates in juvenile and mature plants.
Symptoms initially manifest as small, brown to black necrotic spots on the foliage, often surrounded by a yellow halo. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, causing significant leaf blight. Beneath the soil, the root system undergoes severe rot; roots turn dark, mushy, and eventually disintegrate, leaving the plant unable to sustain itself even under adequate irrigation.
The development of the disease is heavily favored by warm, humid conditions, typically between 25°C and 30°C. The fungal spores are easily transmitted through splashing water, contaminated potting media, and infected gardening tools. Once a container is contaminated, the pathogen can survive for extended periods, making re-infection of new plants highly likely.
Management of Cylindrocladium requires a strict integrated pest management approach:
- Implement strict sanitation protocols, including the sterilization of pots and tools.
- Ensure excellent soil drainage to prevent waterlogged conditions.
- Apply systemic fungicides as a preventative measure in high-risk environments.
- Promptly discard infected plants and the surrounding soil to stop the spread.
