Description
Boxwood cylindrosporium leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Cylindrosporium buxicola. This fungus specifically targets boxwood species, leading to aesthetic damage and significant health decline of ornamental hedges and shrubs.
The primary host is Buxus sempervirens, although other Buxus varieties may also be susceptible. The fungus invades the leaf tissue, disrupting photosynthesis and leading to premature senescence of the foliage, which is particularly devastating for evergreen plants that rely on year-round leaf cover.
Symptoms initially appear as small, discolored spots on the upper leaf surface, which eventually coalesce into larger, necrotic lesions. On the underside of these spots, the fungus produces clusters of spores, which are visible as whitish or light-colored pustules. This leads to yellowing, browning, and eventually, total leaf drop.
Disease development is heavily dependent on moisture and humidity. Rainy seasons, overhead irrigation, and stagnant air within dense foliage facilitate the spread of spores via water splashes and gardening tools. The pathogen thrives in cool to moderate temperatures, making spring and autumn particularly high-risk periods.
Managing the disease requires a combination of cultural practices and chemical control. It is essential to prune infected branches promptly to reduce inoculum levels and improve light penetration and air circulation throughout the canopy. In cases of severe infection, application of fungicides, particularly those with systemic properties, is necessary to prevent widespread plant loss.
