Description
Cytophagosis refers to plant diseases caused by bacteria within the Cytophagaceae family. These gliding bacteria are known for their ability to break down complex carbohydrates, including cellulose, which allows them to degrade plant cell walls effectively. In agricultural settings, they are often associated with soft rots and the rapid decay of vegetative tissues, particularly in the root zone.
The pathogen targets a wide array of crops, including various root vegetables, tubers, and some herbaceous field crops. It is often opportunistic, taking advantage of wounds caused by pests, environmental stress, or mechanical damage during cultivation. Because the bacteria are prevalent in soil environments, crops that grow in direct contact with wet or saturated soil are at a higher risk of infection.
Symptomatology involves the sudden appearance of water-soaked lesions that quickly progress into soft, mushy, or slimy rot. Unlike some dry rots, cytophagosis leads to a rapid collapse of tissue structure. In advanced stages, the affected parts of the plant may emit a foul odor due to secondary bacterial colonization, and the root system often disintegrates, leading to stunted plant growth or premature death.
Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of disease outbreaks. High soil moisture, poor drainage, and high humidity are critical factors that facilitate the motility and proliferation of Cytophagaceae. The bacteria thrive in anaerobic or micro-aerophilic zones within the soil, and they can survive for extended periods on organic matter, making contaminated soil a major source of inoculum.
The economic impact of cytophagosis is significant due to both yield losses in the field and post-harvest decay. Control measures must be integrated to be effective:
- Improving soil drainage systems to prevent waterlogging.
- Implementing strict field hygiene and removing infected crop debris.
- Using certified, disease-free planting material.
- Monitoring soil health to maintain balanced moisture levels and aeration.
