Dactylium, commonly referred to as cobweb mold in the mushroom industry, is a destructive fungal disease caused by Dactylium dendroides (also identified as Hypomyces rosellus). It is considered one of the most persistent pathogens affecting cultivated mushrooms, capable of spreading rapidly across the casing layer.

This pathogen primarily targets cultivated button mushrooms. By colonizing the casing soil, the fungus exerts competitive pressure on the mushroom mycelium, eventually overgrowing and infecting the fruit bodies, leading to significant yield losses in commercial production facilities.

Symptoms typically begin as a fine, white, web-like mycelium growing over the casing surface. As the infection progresses, this growth becomes denser, transforming into a gray or pinkish mat. Infected mushrooms become distorted, soft, and watery, eventually collapsing into a mushy mass that produces a distinct, unpleasant odor.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high humidity (above 90%) and inadequate air circulation. Spores are easily disseminated through watering droplets, air currents, contaminated tools, or by insects such as sciarid flies and phorid flies that carry the fungal spores throughout the growing room.

Preventive strategies are paramount, as chemical control options are limited. Growers must maintain strict hygiene protocols, ensure proper ventilation to reduce relative humidity, and monitor for insect vectors. If an outbreak occurs, the affected area should be immediately isolated and treated with salt or appropriate disinfectants to prevent the further spread of spores to healthy mushroom beds.
