Dendrophoma is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Sphaeropsidales, which serves as a causal agent for various necrotic plant diseases. These pathogens act as opportunists or specialized parasites that invade the epidermis and parenchyma of host plants, leading to localized tissue death and structural weakness.

This fungus primarily affects a wide range of woody plants, including fruit-bearing trees, citrus species, and various ornamental shrubs. The infection can manifest on stems, twigs, and leaves, significantly impacting the aesthetic value and physiological health of the host, often leading to dieback if left unmanaged.

Symptoms typically include the appearance of small, depressed, and discolored spots that gradually enlarge and turn dark brown or black. A defining characteristic of the infection is the development of pycnidia — minute, dark-colored fruiting bodies that emerge from the host tissue and release masses of conidia.

The spread of the disease is heavily dependent on moisture and humidity levels. Rain splash and high humidity allow the conidia to disperse efficiently across the canopy. Additionally, human activities, such as pruning with contaminated tools or improper sanitation practices in nurseries, play a major role in localizing and spreading the pathogen.

The impact of Dendrophoma is measured by reduced plant vigor, branch dieback, and crop loss. Effective management requires an integrated approach to maintain plant health and suppress inoculum levels within the environment. Recommended control measures include:

  • rigorous pruning and removal of diseased branches;
  • sterilization of pruning tools to prevent cross-contamination;
