The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Diaporthe cotoneastri. This pathogen is a significant threat to woody plants, specifically targeting the vascular system and bark tissues. It is classified as a twig blight and canker disease, often causing localized dieback that can escalate if left unmanaged.
The primary host for this fungus is Cotoneaster species. While the pathogen is specialized, it occasionally affects other members of the Rosaceae family. The fungus typically enters the host through wounds, such as pruning cuts, insect feeding sites, or weather-related fissures in the bark, establishing an infection center.
The symptoms are characterized by the appearance of discolored, sunken cankers on stems and branches. Foliage on affected branches will often wilt suddenly, turn yellow, and eventually become necrotic. In advanced stages, the fungus spreads throughout the wood, leading to the total death of the distal parts of the branches.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Diaporthe. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures provide ideal conditions for spore production and dispersal. Wind and splashing rain act as primary vectors for moving spores from cankers to healthy plant tissue during the growing season.
