Description
Diaporthopsis is a genus of fungi containing various pathogenic species known to affect a wide range of woody plants, trees, and shrubs. These pathogens are classified under the order Diaporthales and are primarily responsible for causing stem and branch canker diseases that can severely impact plant health and structural integrity.
The fungus typically attacks perennial crops, including various fruit trees and ornamental species. Infection usually occurs through natural openings in the bark, leaf scars, or wounds sustained during pruning or weather-related damage, allowing the fungus to colonize the vascular tissues of the host plant.
Symptoms of the disease often include the development of depressed, necrotic lesions on the bark and branches. As the fungal infection advances, the affected areas become sunken, often leading to girdling of the stems or branches, which results in wilting, dieback of foliage, and eventually the death of distal parts of the plant.
Development and spread of Diaporthopsis are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures. The fungus produces spores that are easily disseminated by wind, water splashes, and contaminated agricultural tools, facilitating rapid transmission within an orchard or garden.
Management of this fungal disease requires an integrated approach to maintain plant vigor and limit the spread of inoculum. Key protective and preventive practices include:
- Prompt pruning and disposal of infected plant material to reduce spore load.
- Applying protective copper-based fungicides after pruning to seal wounds.
- Maintaining optimal plant spacing to promote air circulation and reduce humidity.
- Sterilizing all pruning tools between plants to prevent mechanical transmission.
