Description
The Diatrypaceae family comprises a group of ascomycetous fungi known for causing various wood necrosis and canker diseases. These pathogens often act as opportunistic fungi, colonizing stressed or wounded woody plants, gradually breaking down cellular structures and impairing the tree's vascular system.
Typical host plants include grapevines, pome fruits like apples and pears, as well as a wide range of broadleaf forest trees. The infection path usually involves colonization of exposed wood through pruning wounds, frost cracks, or sites damaged by insects, which allows the mycelium to penetrate deeper into the sapwood.
Initial symptoms are often subtle, presenting as bark discoloration or localized sinking of the tissue. As the disease progresses, characteristic black, pimple-like stromatic structures erupt through the bark surface. These structures serve as the primary source of inoculum, releasing spores that can infect neighboring branches or nearby trees.
The development of Diatrypaceae is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, with high humidity and prolonged rainfall favoring spore production and dispersal. Weakened plants, whether due to water stress, poor soil nutrition, or previous pest infestations, are significantly more susceptible to successful colonization by these fungi.
Management and protection rely primarily on strict sanitation practices. It is crucial to remove all infected wood during the dormant season, sanitize cutting tools between trees using disinfectant solutions, and apply protective wound dressings to large pruning cuts. Strengthening the plant through balanced fertilization and preventing mechanical injuries remain the best long-term strategies for control.
While chemical control options can be limited, early intervention using copper-based fungicides during the dormant phase can help reduce the spore load in the orchard. Continuous monitoring for bark abnormalities is essential, as early detection allows for the localized removal of diseased tissue before the fungus can girdle vital branches or the main trunk.
