Dictyosteliales are a group of social amoebae found primarily in soil environments. While not classified as typical plant pathogens, their complex lifecycle and predatory behavior towards bacteria can influence the soil microbiome, which is a critical factor for successful crop production in various agroecological settings.
The causative agents are unicellular organisms that undergo aggregation during their lifecycle. By interacting with the bacteria that inhabit the rhizosphere, these organisms can potentially alter the chemical environment surrounding the root system, occasionally leading to nutrient uptake competition for the host plants.
Vegetable crops and cereal seedlings are most susceptible to environments dominated by these microorganisms. When moisture levels remain consistently high, the metabolic activity of soil amoebae increases, which may suppress the natural resistance of the root system and leave it vulnerable to secondary infections.
