Dictyostelium mucoroides is a cellular slime mold primarily found in forest soils, acting as a bacterivore. While it is predominantly a beneficial decomposer, its presence in high-density agricultural environments can sometimes lead to the colonization of the rhizosphere, where it potentially competes with beneficial microflora and affects seedling development.

The pathogen, technically classified as a social amoeba, influences plant health by altering the rhizosphere environment. This interaction can weaken the root system, making young plants more susceptible to pathogenic fungi and bacteria, resulting in stunted growth and reduced nutrient uptake capacity.

Symptoms of infestation include yellowish wilting of lower leaves, impaired root hair development, and a general lack of vigor in seedlings. In highly humid conditions, one may observe the characteristic fruiting bodies—tiny white stalks—emerging from the soil surface near the plant base.
