Description

The Dictyotaceae family comprises brown algae belonging to the order Dictyotales. In marine agricultural contexts, these organisms are often treated as biological agents of stress that cause significant damage to cultured seaweed and seagrass beds, effectively acting as an opportunistic disease-like threat to marine ecosystems.

The pathogen type is competitive epiphytic growth. Species such as Dictyota dichotoma attach themselves to the thalli of cultivated plants, competing for nutrients and space. This colonization triggers a rapid decline in the health of the host, leading to physiological inhibition and widespread plant mortality in aquaculture settings.

The cultures primarily affected include various agar-producing red algae and Laminaria species. The impact is most severe in shallow-water farming areas where light availability is critical for photosynthesis, and the presence of Dictyotaceae blocks the necessary radiation, leading to structural degradation of the host plants.

Symptoms of infestation are easily recognizable by the presence of ribbon-like or fan-shaped dark brown thalli growing directly on the host's surface. As the density of the epiphyte increases, the host plant suffers from tissue necrosis, chlorosis, and detachment from the substrate, often followed by secondary infections by opportunistic bacteria or fungi.

Favorable conditions for the spread of Dictyotaceae include high nutrient concentrations (nitrates and phosphates) in the water column and elevated seawater temperatures. Prevention strategies focus on water quality management, physical removal of the algae during the early stages of the bloom, and optimizing the depth of cultivation structures to limit colonization potential.
