Didymium melanospermum is a species of myxomycetes, often referred to as slime molds, that frequently appear on agricultural crops and garden plants. While technically not a true fungus, this organism acts as a saprotroph that can transition onto living tissue, causing concerns regarding the aesthetic and physiological health of the affected plant material.

The organism primarily affects herbaceous crops and ground-hugging vegetation, especially under humid conditions. It creates a plasmodium that moves across the surface of stems and leaves. When it enters the reproductive phase, it forms small, dark, and powdery spore-bearing structures that attach to the plant epidermis, which can physically impede light absorption and gas exchange.

Symptoms are identified by the presence of dense, gray to black sporocarps. Unlike true parasitic fungi that penetrate the plant tissue and cause yellowing or wilting, Didymium melanospermum stays on the surface. However, its presence often indicates that the environment is far too wet, which indirectly puts plants at a higher risk of developing actual bacterial or fungal infections.

Development and spread are driven by high moisture, stagnant air, and an abundance of decaying organic matter on the soil surface. Heavy rainfall, high humidity, and the lack of proper crop spacing are the primary factors that facilitate the rapid colonization of plants by these slime molds. They are primarily dispersed by splashing water and airborne spores.

Management strategies focus on cultural control methods rather than chemical intervention. Improving air circulation around plants is the most effective way to prevent outbreaks. Additionally, proper irrigation management, timely weeding to reduce localized humidity, and the removal of excess organic mulch are crucial steps to keep the environment unfavorable for the growth of Didymium melanospermum.
