Description
Truffle disease, caused by the fungus Diehliomyces microsporus, is a notorious problem in commercial mushroom production. Known as "false truffle," this pathogen acts as a parasitic competitor that rapidly colonizes the substrate, effectively suffocating the mycelium of the cultivated mushroom.
The primary host for this fungus is the button mushroom, Agaricus bisporus. Once introduced into the compost or casing layer, the pathogen thrives at the expense of the mushroom crop. It diverts essential nutrients, leading to a complete cessation of mushroom development and significant economic losses for growers.
The most distinctive symptom is the emergence of small, irregularly shaped, cream-to-brown fruiting bodies that look like truffles on the surface of the casing soil. As the disease progresses, these structures rupture and release a dense cloud of spores. Growers may also notice a stale or moldy odor and a localized failure of the mushroom mycelium to colonize the substrate.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in disease development. High temperatures during the spawn run and casing stages, combined with high humidity and poor ventilation, create ideal conditions for Diehliomyces. The spores are highly resilient and can be easily transmitted by contaminated equipment, insect vectors like sciarid flies, or poor hygiene practices among personnel.
Management of truffle disease relies heavily on strict sanitation and preventative measures. It is essential to ensure that the composting process achieves effective pasteurization to kill any latent spores. Maintaining a clean growing environment, implementing rigorous pest control to eliminate fly vectors, and discarding any infected substrate immediately are vital steps to protect the crop.
