Dilophospora leaf spot is a plant disease caused by the fungus Dilophospora alopecuri. This pathogen is known for infecting various grass species, including major cereal crops like wheat and barley. It is often associated with the presence of seed gall nematodes, which facilitate the entry of the fungus into the plant tissues, leading to systemic infection.
The host range of Dilophospora alopecuri includes a wide variety of Poaceae plants. The fungus primarily targets the stem, leaves, and inflorescences. In agricultural settings, the disease can cause significant economic losses by reducing both the quality and the quantity of the harvested grain through direct tissue damage and disrupted plant development.
Symptoms are easily identifiable by the appearance of dark, black pycnidia (fruiting bodies of the fungus) on the affected plant parts.
