Dipodascus fruit rot is an infectious disease of plants caused by the ascomycete fungus Dipodascus albidus. This organism is classified as a yeast-like fungus and is frequently identified as a pathogen that rapidly colonizes fruits and vegetables that possess high sugar content.

The pathogen primarily affects fleshy fruits, vegetables, and root crops during the ripening or storage stages. In agronomic environments, vulnerable crops include tomatoes, melons, various cucurbits, and certain citrus varieties, where the fungus gains entry through micro-abrasions, insect damage, or cracks in the plant cuticle.

The primary clinical symptom of the infection is the appearance of a characteristic white or creamy mold colony, which subsequently leads to soft, watery rot patches. Affected tissues rapidly lose structural integrity, turning into a mushy mass, often accompanied by a distinct sour or yeast-like odor, which is the result of metabolic fermentation of the host tissue.

The development of the disease is strictly dependent on environmental factors, particularly humidity and temperature. Optimal conditions for the proliferation of Dipodascus albidus occur at high relative humidity (above 85%) and temperatures ranging from +20°C to +28°C. The pathogen spreads efficiently through airborne spores and insect vectors.

The economic impact of the disease is severe due to the total loss of marketability and the potential for rapid spoilage of large crop batches in storage. Effective protection and prevention strategies include:
