The order Dothideales represents a diverse group of Ascomycete fungi that contain numerous significant plant pathogens. These fungi are characterized by the formation of loculoascomata, which protect their asci and spores. Their ecological adaptability makes them persistent threats in both agricultural and forest ecosystems globally.
The diseases caused by these fungi generally manifest as various types of leaf spots, blights, and shoot diebacks. By colonizing the host tissues, the fungal mycelium causes cellular necrosis, which directly impacts the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis and reduces overall biomass. Over time, the host becomes severely weakened, leading to reduced yield and poor fruit quality.
A broad range of plants is susceptible to infection by these fungi. Key host crops include pome fruits, stone fruits, ornamental trees, and several field crops. Early symptoms often appear as small chlorotic lesions that expand into dark, necrotic spots. In later stages, structures such as pycnidia or pseudothecia may become visible on the affected plant surface.
The development and dispersal of Dothideales are strongly correlated with environmental moisture and temperature. Spore production is usually triggered by high humidity, while wind and rain splashes facilitate their transmission to healthy tissues. Warm, stagnant air conditions often exacerbate the intensity of the disease outbreak during the active growing season.
Managing these diseases requires a multi-faceted approach involving cultural and chemical tactics. Reducing inoculum pressure through orchard sanitation is essential. Furthermore, the application of site-specific fungicides during periods of high infection risk is crucial for protecting susceptible crops. Integrating disease-resistant varieties into the cultivation strategy significantly lowers the reliance on continuous chemical interventions.
