Dothideomycetes represent the largest and most diverse class of Ascomycota fungi, playing a critical role in agricultural pathology. This class encompasses a wide range of significant plant pathogens responsible for causing severe economic losses in various cropping systems worldwide by inducing leaf spots, blights, and vascular diseases.
The causative agents are fungi that typically reproduce via spores released from specialized structures known as pseudothecia. These pathogens function as biotrophs or necrotrophs, invading the host tissue and utilizing plant resources to fuel their own life cycle, often leading to rapid tissue death and systemic weakness of the infected plants.
These fungi exhibit a broad host range, attacking virtually all major agricultural crops including cereals, legumes, oilseeds, and fruit trees. Common diseases attributed to this class include various leaf blotches, glume blotches, and stem cankers, which can severely compromise crop vitality, reduce photosynthesis, and significantly decrease both yield quantity and quality.
Key symptoms of infection usually involve the appearance of localized chlorotic or necrotic spots, often surrounded by halos. As the infection progresses, these lesions may expand and coalesce, leading to severe defoliation, stem breakage, or premature senescence. In many cases, diagnostic signs such as dark fruiting bodies or masses of spores appear within the lesions, confirming the fungal nature of the disease.
Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of Dothideomycetes outbreaks. High relative humidity, persistent rainfall, and moderate temperatures create the perfect environment for spore germination and colonization. These pathogens are highly resilient, often overwintering on infected stubble, debris, soil, or seeds, which ensures a recurring infection cycle in intensive farming environments.
