Description

The pathogen Drechslera tetramera is a dematiaceous hyphomycete that causes significant diseases in various cereals and grasses. It is a soil-borne and seed-borne fungus capable of surviving in plant debris under adverse environmental conditions. Its biology is characterized by the production of abundant conidia that facilitate rapid secondary spread across fields during the growing season.

This fungus primarily infects a wide range of monocotyledonous crops, including wheat, barley, oats, maize, and various forage grasses. In addition to leaf infection, the pathogen is frequently isolated from symptomatic roots and sub-crown internodes, contributing to complex root rot syndromes that affect plant vigor and stand density from the seedling stage onwards.

Symptoms typically present as small, dark brown or necrotic lesions on leaves, which often develop a chlorotic halo. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, coalesce, and may lead to extensive necrosis of the leaf tissue. In humid conditions, a characteristic olive-black fuzzy growth of spores is visible on the lesions. Stem base browning and seedling blight are also common manifestations of this pathogen.

Disease development is highly dependent on weather conditions, specifically high humidity and warm temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C. Frequent rainfall events during the vegetative growth stages trigger the release and dispersal of conidia. Infested crop residues left on the soil surface serve as the primary inoculum reservoir, making reduced tillage systems particularly vulnerable.

The economic impact of this disease is significant, resulting in reduced photosynthetic area, premature senescence, and substantial grain yield losses. Management requires an integrated approach including the use of certified, fungicide-treated seeds, long-term crop rotation, and the incorporation of crop residues into the soil. Foliar fungicide applications are recommended during early symptom onset to minimize the spread and impact on final yield.
