Description
Edema is a non-infectious physiological disorder that occurs when a plant takes up water through its roots faster than it can transpire it through its leaves. This causes internal cell pressure to rise significantly, resulting in the rupture of cell walls and the development of water-soaked blisters or lesions on the plant tissue.
This condition affects a wide variety of plants grown in greenhouses or indoor environments, including many vegetables and ornamentals. It is particularly notable in certain orchid species, such as Cattleya, which are highly sensitive to fluctuations in environmental moisture and root zone conditions.
The primary symptoms include small, raised, water-filled bumps or swellings on the undersides of leaves. Over time, these areas may turn brown, corky, or scabby as the damaged cells die and form scar tissue. In severe cases, the entire leaf structure may become deformed and lose its ability to function correctly.
Edema develops primarily under conditions where soil moisture is high, but atmospheric transpiration is low. Key triggers include low light levels, high humidity, cool air temperatures, and poor ventilation. When the soil is warmer than the air, roots remain active, while leaf pores (stomata) close or cannot release moisture efficiently.
Managing edema is entirely focused on cultural practices rather than chemical treatments. To prevent the condition, growers should:
- Improve drainage in containers and planting beds.
- Reduce watering frequencies during cloudy or cool weather.
- Increase air circulation around the plants.
- Ensure adequate lighting to promote transpiration.
