Description
Edema (or oedema) is a non-infectious physiological disorder that affects plants when they absorb water through their roots faster than they can transpire it through their leaves. This imbalance causes the cells to become engorged with water, leading them to burst and form blister-like eruptions, which eventually harden into corky or necrotic spots.
The biological mechanism behind edema is directly related to cellular turgor pressure. When soil moisture is high, humidity is excessive, and temperatures are cool, the transpiration process in leaves slows down significantly. Consequently, the internal water pressure builds up within the plant tissues, eventually exceeding the structural integrity of the cell walls.
This condition is most prevalent in greenhouse environments, indoor plants, and specific crops such as tomatoes, peppers, geraniums, and succulents. Plants kept in poorly ventilated areas with high soil moisture levels are at the highest risk. Unlike fungal pathogens, edema does not spread from plant to plant, but it can affect a large number of plants in a greenhouse simultaneously due to uniform environmental conditions.
The economic impact of edema primarily involves reduced plant vigor and aesthetic loss. Leaves exhibiting severe edema often become chlorotic, curl, and drop prematurely. Although the plant can often recover if conditions improve, the damage to leaf tissue limits photosynthesis, which directly impacts the plant's overall growth rate and final yield quality.
Management and control of edema are entirely focused on adjusting environmental factors to encourage transpiration. This includes increasing airflow via fans or vents, providing adequate spacing between plants to improve air circulation, and reducing irrigation frequency during periods of low light or high humidity. Ensuring a well-draining potting medium is also crucial for preventing water accumulation in the root zone.
