The class Ellioviricetes comprises a distinct group of viruses characterized by negative-sense single-stranded RNA genomes. In agronomy, these pathogens are recognized as significant threats that disrupt host plant metabolism, leading to systemic infections that compromise the physiological integrity of the crop.
These viruses affect a wide array of agricultural crops, ranging from vegetables to ornamental plants. Transmission primarily occurs through specialized insect vectors, such as aphids, leafhoppers, or whiteflies, which facilitate the entry of viral particles into the plant's vascular tissue during feeding.
