The Elsinoaceae family belongs to the order Myriangiales and comprises several significant plant pathogenic fungi. These organisms are known for causing various diseases characterized by scab-like lesions, tissue distortions, and spotting on leaves, stems, and fruits. They are major concerns in both commercial viticulture and fruit production.

The primary causal agents from this family, such as species of the Elsinoë genus, invade the epidermal and sub-epidermal tissues of the host plant. By stimulating abnormal cell growth (hyperplasia), the fungus creates scabs that break the protective surface of the plant, leaving it vulnerable to secondary infections and severe dehydration.

Symptoms are typically identified as small, circular, or irregular necrotic spots surrounded by a darkened margin. As the lesion matures, the tissue may become corky or brittle, leading to severe cracking of fruit surfaces and shoots. Infected flowers often abort, which directly results in reduced yield and compromised harvest quality.

The lifecycle of Elsinoaceae is closely tied to moisture availability. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air are ideal conditions for the dispersal of conidia. The fungus typically overwinters in crop debris, such as fallen leaves and infected twigs, which serve as primary inocula for the next growing season when weather warms up.

Strategies include sanitation—removing and destroying all infected plant debris—and ensuring optimal plant spacing to promote airflow.
