Emericella nidulans, the sexual stage of the well-known fungus Aspergillus nidulans, is a significant fungal pathogen that primarily affects agricultural commodities during storage and processing. It is ubiquitous in nature and thrives in environments where organic matter is stored under suboptimal conditions, causing significant economic losses worldwide.

The fungus affects a wide variety of crops, including cereals, oilseeds like soybeans and peanuts, and various vegetable species. It acts as a saprophyte, colonizing dead or dying tissues, but can also act as an opportunistic pathogen when host defenses are compromised by abiotic stress, such as drought or physical damage to the plant's protective surface.

The visual symptoms of an Emericella nidulans infection are often characterized by the development of a dense, powdery mycelium that ranges in color from green to brown or yellow, depending on the stage of sporulation.
