Description

Enteridium is a genus of slime molds (myxomycetes) often found on the bark of dead or living trees. While these organisms are not plant pathogens that consume living tissue directly, they are often mistaken for fungal infections because they form visible, sponge-like structures on the trunks and branches of affected trees.

The organism, most notably Enteridium lycoperdon, belongs to the group of myxomycetes. These are fascinating organisms that exist as a creeping mass called a plasmodium during their vegetative stage, feeding on bacteria, fungal spores, and organic debris. They transition into a reproductive stage where they form spore-bearing bodies known as aethalia.

The host range includes a variety of deciduous trees, including birch, maple, and oak. They are most frequently found on trees that are already stressed or have compromised bark integrity due to physical damage, frost cracks, or advanced age. A healthy, vigorous tree with intact bark is rarely colonized by this organism.

Symptoms typically manifest as soft, cushion-like growths on the bark surface. In their early stages, these aethalia are light-colored and spongy. As they mature, they darken to a brownish, glossy color and eventually rupture to release a mass of spores. Although they don't penetrate deep into the healthy wood, their presence indicates areas of decay where moisture accumulates.

Managing the presence of Enteridium involves improving overall tree health and sanitation. Because they thrive in moist, decaying environments, the following measures are recommended:

  • Remove and dispose of dead or decaying bark carefully.
  • Prune branches that are heavily infested or dead to improve air circulation.
  • Treat bark wounds promptly to prevent moisture collection.
  • Avoid over-watering or dense planting that creates high humidity around tree trunks.
